Smith-Turner collection, c.1880-1905, c. 1940.

This collection consists of materials pertaining to the James M. Turner family of Lansing, Michigan. Included in the collection are photographs of Tyler Hull, H. W. Longyear, James M. Turner, his wife Sophie Porter (Scott) Turner, his second son Scott Turner, and his wife's parents Ira and Esther Scott. Also included in this collection are a photograph of James M. Turner's birthplace (c. 1850) and several pictures of the Smith-Turner House (c. 1885). The Smith-Turner house was built in 1873 by Samuel C. Smith, a Lansing pioneer and business owner, and purchased by James M. Turner in 1878. Turner lived in the house until he died in 1896. In 1925 R. E. Olds purchased and leased the house, and subsequently deeded it to the Wilde Conservatory of Music. Today, it serves as an apartment building. The Smith-Turner house was placed on the list of National Historic Places in 1980. It is located at 326 West Grand River Avenue in Lansing, Michigan. Also includes photographs (c. 1940) of the Sophie Scott Turner House, which was located at 505 North Washington Avenue in Lansing. Mrs. Turner built the house in 1927 and lived there until her death in 1941. The house became the site for the State Historical Museum from1943 to 1979. Lansing Community College took over the property in 1980. In 2003, the College demolished the building.
